How Physical Objects Can Deepen Your Family Roots

“Your dad’s motorcycle is the pride and joy of our club!”

We were so blown away by this statement… but more on that in a sec.

Physical objects can root us to our family’s past in a special way.

At our Shabbat dinners older generations will often bring a special object to help tell a story.

April’s multigenerational family was great at keeping these simple family heirlooms.

The Amish-made table in our home was the same table that sat in April’s great grandmother’s house and was the place where she would can vegetables to help their family through the winter months.

April’s mom gives a special object to each of her grandchildren at their coming of age celebration at 13, always in line with something special about them.

So one Sabbath we traveled to a motorcycle club rally because we heard the man who bought April’s dad’s motorcycle was displaying it.

The new owner of the bike wasn’t there, but one of his fellow club members told us how much their club treasured this 1957 T20C Triumph Competition Cub, complete with all the special modifications April’s dad made as he went on to win several races.

Do you have any physical objects that may one day help tell a story to your grandkids?

These can help deepen our kids’ connection to our family’s past and those deep roots are so important.

“The deeper the roots, the higher the reach.”
