Parents Who Repent

“Nothing scares wolves away from a flock like a culture where the leaders are the ones who repent first and repent most.”

A friend of mine said this about the church and it really struck a chord – not only for church life but also for life in the home.

As moms and dads, sometimes we don’t realize we’re creating a culture of pride in our home.

It’s a subtle problem but one with grave consequences.

Isaiah 30:15 says, “In repentance and rest is your salvation.”

We talk a lot in Family Teams about how a rhythm of rest can save the family, but a rhythm of repentance is just as necessary.

It’s simple to create a culture of humility; you just need to regularly repent from the top down. Starting with the parents.

Have you discovered sin in your life or have you learned a critical new truth? Why not take a minute at your next family dinner or family meeting and repent out loud about it?

This builds faith in the Gospel as our source of identity since our righteousness is not founded on our action but on Jesus alone.

So many Christians families of the past have suffered from the “Dad, who never apologized for anything” syndrome. This pattern either fills kids with discouragement or pride. It doesn’t build Gospel-centered kids.

Let your kids see you walk out of false beliefs and dead works into the truth.

“Repent and believe the Good News.”
